Resumen

AREVALO JARAMILLO, María Inés. Women legislators in Ecuador between 1979 and 2010: social and political characteristics. E&c [online]. 2019, vol.1, n.8, pp.205-226. ISSN 2477-9245.  https://doi.org/10.37228/estado_comunes.v1.n8.2019.107.

This article aims to analyze the presence of women in the legislature through a descriptive study. This work takes as empirical evidence the Ecuadorian case in fifteen legislative periods, from 1979 to 2010. It works with a quantitative method applied to an original database where institutional and social variables of women entering the National Assembly are observed. The results reveal that the Ecuadorian legislature has been integrated with 9% of women assembly members, most of them exercising the provincial representation of the electoral districts of Guayas and Pichincha. Contrary to what happens in other countries, the Ecuadorian legislators belong, in their majority, to right-wing parties. About the legislative commissions, about 50% of the assembly members join the ones related to issues of education, culture, health and workers' rights.
