Resumen

PACHECO DE CAMPOS BROZOSKI, Fernanda. A peripheral geopolitical view on the importance of oceanic wealth in the global dispute for strategic natural resources in Latin America. E&c [online]. 2019, vol.2, n.9, pp.229-246. ISSN 2477-9245.  https://doi.org/10.37228/estado_comunes.v2.n9.2019.127.

Faced with the challenge of reflecting on Latin America's place in the contemporary world geopolitical order and advancing the understanding of still unclear changes in the regional political-economic landscape, we believe it is pertinent to bring to the academic debate some theoretical reflections that contribute to reconceptualizing the region as a space where the great powers project their influence. Towards this end, we first present a brief overview of some liberal theoretical presuppositions; then, from a realistic peripheral perspective, we counter this line of thought by offering a different interpretation of how the International System functions; and finally, we portray Latin America as a sphere of influence in the context of a recent phenomenon that has gained significance in the global power struggle: the intensification of the expansion of the States on the seas. In this way, by offering an analysis that brings together conjuntural and structural characteristics of our reality, we hope to contribute new elements towards the re-evaluation of Latin American national strategies and essential issues that should have greater relevance in the project of regional integration.
