CHAVEZ, Nashira  e  LEE, Po Chun. Gone with the power: the geo-economics of energy resources between China and Latin America. E&c [online]. 2019, vol.2, n.9, pp.211-227. ISSN 2477-9245.  https://doi.org/10.37228/estado_comunes.v2.n9.2019.126.

This article analyzes the geo-economic relationship of the energy sector between China and Latin America. Through the concepts portrayed by Scholvin and Wigell and the coinciding conceptual framework of Blackwill and Harris, this study examines China's geoeconomic policy and strategy towards the energy resources of the Latin American region. Evidenced by data and patterns of consumption and production of energy resources, this study observes that the financial instruments used to invest and acquire energy resources are guided by cost-benefit calculations in order to improve the opportunities of Chinese companies in foreign markets. This leads to the security approach being relegated to a secondary role and belies China's intention to monopolize the supply of energy sources. The sum of increasing trade, escalating FDI, the ascension of Chinese national companies and the complementarity of the Chinese economy makes China one of the main strategic partners in Latin America. Paying attention to the way these links develop will influence the behavior and standards of its partner countries. In this context, the increase of China's economic participation in a region considered under the sphere of influence of the United States gains weight and recognition.
