Abstract

SANCHEZ LEVIS, Rogelio P. Post-Cold War conflicting models of strategic representation of security and the “new old threat’s” role: The case of the Union of South American Nations. E&c [online]. 2019, vol.2, n.9, pp.155-182. ISSN 2477-9245.  https://doi.org/10.37228/estado_comunes.v2.n9.2019.122.

The article sets out to initiate a discussion on the strategic counter-hegemonic representations of security against the dominant paradigm of the post-Cold War that is subject to the project of expansion and imposition of the liberal economic order on a planetary scale. The selection of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) for this analysis responded to the interest of expanding knowledge about the autonomization of the South American geopolitical discourse. It will also explore the reasons why the readings, discourses and spatial policies cannot be unified before the said phenomena, despite the persistence of dangers and transnational challenges demanding the mobilization of common resources and responses. The theoretical notions about the tensions in the discursive structures of Barnes and Duncan, as well as the approaches about the deterritorialization of the threats in the geopolitical discourse of Gearód Tuathail, those of Risk Society of Ulrich Beck, and the strategic representations of security by Edgardo Manero, gave the work a theoretical prism coherent with its objectives. May serve this proposal to promote an urgent and necessary debate around a problem that concerns States, societies and individuals.
