Abstract

CRUZ NEGRETE, Johanna Belén  and  . Economic Concentration of Agribusiness in Ecuador 2006-2013: An empirical study. E&c [online]. 2018, vol.2, n.7, pp.89-106. ISSN 2477-9245.  https://doi.org/10.37228/estado_comunes.v2.n7.2018.83.

The objective of this article is to observe empirically the evolution of market concentration in the sectors that make up Ecuador's agro-industry between 2006 and 2013. For this purpose, the following sales concentration indices were calculated for each sector: (i) Hirschman-Herfindhal index; (ii) C4 index; (iii) Gini index; and (iv) Linda index. The information used corresponds to the income of the companies declared to the Superintendency of Securities and Insurance Companies at the national level. The results indicate that there is a high degree of heterogeneity in the concentration level of each sector. However, there is a trend towards an increase in all of them, regardless of the index analysed. In other words, the deconcentrated sectors become concentrated and those that were highly concentrated remain constant. The article does not address the causes of this trend, as it is an initial moment of empirical analysis.
