This article outlines the main aspects that characterize the theories that study the processes of regional integration and regionalism in South America. The first section addresses the issues of integration and regionalism from the main trends, and then presents an analysis about how integration is seen in South America. Subsequently, some observations are made regarding the origins of UNASUR and the theoretical trends that analyze it.
