ANASTASOPOULOS, Nicholas. Good Living, sustainability and the Commons: An Ecuadorian and an international context. E&c [online]. 2017, vol.1, n.4, pp.39-55. ISSN 2477-9245. https://doi.org/10.37228/estado_comunes.v1.n4.2017.37.
Both sustainability and Buen Vivir (Good Living) are relatively new and rather abstract terms, which lend themselves to critical analyses and therefore often to multiple interpretations and misunderstandings, as they address several facets of life, such as the economy, the environment and society. Sustainability has a universal applicability, while Buen Vivir (Good Living) is primarily specific to the Ecuadorian Constitution. This article explores theoretical aspects and convergences between sustainability and Buen Vivir (Good Living) and it examines the commons as a category that underlies the tenets of these two concepts, primarily from an angle that addresses space and social relations. It argues that the concepts of community, as well as the relationship with nature that a commons approach affords are the means to achieve sustainability and Buen Vivir (Good Living).
