Abstract

CEVALLOS, Pamela. Replicas and returns, activating the past from contemporary art. Índex [online]. 2023, n.16, pp.103-118. ISSN 2477-9199.  https://doi.org/10.26807/cav.v9i16.532.

This article approaches the discussion on pre-Hispanic objects repatriation through strategies and activations from contemporary art, that go beyond the notions of cultural heritage and nation. Based on my ethnographic experience in the community of La Pila (Manabí-Ecuador), I explore the potential of artisan practices based on replication and reproduction as forms of return that emerge from memories and knowledge from doing. I will present the processes of the project Corrientes de retorno (2021) to research appropriations and possibilities of coexistence with the past that distance themselves from the canon of originality and authenticity.

Keywords : cultural heritage; archaeology; crafts; artisanal knowledge; contemporary art.
