Abstract

FREIRE SMITH, Marla. Fragmented memory and body(s). A rereading of the work “Fantomas o mi memoria incomunicada” by Nancy Gewölb. Índex [online]. 2022, n.13, pp.86-99. ISSN 2477-9199.  https://doi.org/10.26807/cav.v0i13.480.

The article deals with one of the first works of the chilean artist Nancy Gewölb (1939-) called “Fantomas o mi memoria incomunicada” made at the Centro Cultural Estación Mapocho in 1982, in the midst of a dictatorial context marked by violence on bodies. Through a qualitative approach that includes the review of various documentary sources (press, archives, personal photographs) and conversations with the artist herself, this work is reread, seeking to bring it back to memory and register it as a work that challenges the dictatorship in Chile at that time.

Keywords : Nancy Gewölb; contemporary art; memory; installation; body; dictatorship; deconstruction.
