Abstract

FERRER, Claudia. “Avant-garde videotape”, first exhibition of video art in Mexico. Índex [online]. 2022, n.13, pp.49-66. ISSN 2477-9199.  https://doi.org/10.26807/cav.v0i13.465.

In July 1973 the Temporary Exhibitions Gallery of the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City (MAM) opened the exhibition «Videocinta de Vanguardia. Video Art Estética Televisual», sponsored by the United States Embassy. This event was the first encounter of the Mexican people with American video art, at a time when cultural institutional spaces continued to privilege more traditional visual arts. This article offers, first of all, a historical reconstruction of the exhibition, which has been scarcely documented in specialized literature. such reconstruction is based in some main sources, which are two critical reviews written by the Peruvian theorist Juan Acha, and the only available copy of the exhibition catalogue. Second, the article approaches the exhibition in the light of the wider political, social and cultural context in the First and Third World.

Keywords : exhibition; video art; experimental video; television; Mexico; Juan Acha; genealogy; MAM.
