Abstract

PINELLA, Fernanda Cubas. WRITINGS FROM THE EXILE: ON BORDER THINKING IN LUIS CAMNITZER’S ART CRITICISM. Índex [online]. 2021, n.12, pp.10-39. ISSN 2477-9199.  https://doi.org/10.26807/cav.vi12.456.

Since the second half of the 1960s, Luis Camnitzer traces in his writings the complex portrait of Latin America, whose colonial past seems to be perpetuated under new forms of domination and control, which have a direct impact on the field of culture. This essay explores how biographical and geohistorical aspects shaped Camnitzer’s theoretical project, and led it to a decolonial turn within the framework of aesthetics and art. Therefore, I propose to analyze a selection of texts by the Uruguayan artist through the lens of the decolonial option. I will focus on two crucial events in Camnitzer’s life, captured in his texts: the diaspora and the exile. Immigration becomes a propitious territory for reflection and writing, in which a decolonial project is built and seeks to undo the dynamics of power established in art and aesthetics. This essay aims to understand how Camnitzer’s theorical practice, involved in the modernity/coloniality debate, is motivated by border thinking.

Keywords : decolonial theory; art criticism; border thinking; decolonial aesthetics; center-periphery.
