Francisco Fortuny Masagué (1864-1942) was an important Spanish artist, active in Buenos Aires during the first half of the 20 th century, although his oeuvre has been only partially studied. This paper aims to collect and amend the existing information on the artist, but also to provide new biographic and professional data, in order to allow for a thorough interpretation of his contribution to the graphic arts in Argentina, during an especially interesting moment on its historical evolution.

Keywords : Francisco Fortuny Masagué; graphic illustration; history painting; Argentina; pedagogy; magazines.
