Abstract

URTUBEY, Pedro Ignacio. On experience and the art of narrating. A dialogue between Walter Benjamin and and an artwork of Navin Rawanchaikul. Índex [online]. 2019, n.7, pp.78-84. ISSN 2477-9199.  https://doi.org/10.26807/cav.v0i07.202.

The present papers seeks to analyze the artwork Welcome Visitor (2008), made by the Thai artist Navin Rawanchaikul (1971), under the perspective of German philosopher Walter Benjamin (1892-1940). Our analysis begins with a resume of the textThe Narrator(1936), where Benjamin conceptualizes the terms of “oral narration” and “experience”. We understand that such concepts can be useful keys, indeed the work of Rawanchaikul is based in issues such as the experience of exile and identity in the global world, in order to show the stories of different migrants. Consequently, the present work is based on an interpretative perspective, in order to try to formulate a dialogue between a Benjaminian perspective and the analysis of an artwork of some of today's most resounding contemporary Asian artists.

Keywords : narration; art; Navin Rawanchaikul; Walter Benjamin.
