Abstract

MAUELEN DE LOS REYES, David. Situation of contemporary chilean art. The III Biennial of September 2001. A methodological proposal. Índex [online]. 2018, n.6, pp.60-68. ISSN 2477-9199.  https://doi.org/10.26807/cav.v0i04.131.

The definition of a contemporary art in Latin America goes through a sum of complex determinants. On the one hand, it has been traditional to try to enter the globalized discussion on the subject, and on the other it has been as necessary as it is to resist introducing oneself to the local determinants of cultural transformations.

During 2000 and 2001 a project was developed for the Art Biennial of the National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA) in Santiago de Chile. His focus was on reviewing the systems of social representation, and the various devices of symbolic production that determined the artistic field.

It was an experience resisted by the local media, but it delivered several results. Through this article, most of the references used in this project are highlighted, as well as the means by which this methodological option was structured for the question of the possibility or impossibility of a local contemporary art.

Keywords : action art; performance; avant-garde; aesthetics; theory; criticism; asistematicity; politics.
