Abstract

ADLER, Jazmín. The Aesthetics of Ruins: the power of vestiges in contemporary art. Índex [online]. 2018, n.5, pp.92-101. ISSN 2477-9199.  https://doi.org/10.26807/cav.v0i04.93.

This article analyses the ways in which different contemporary artworks usually tackle the subject of ruins from a material and conceptual point of view. After studying the interest in vestiges throughout the art history, the paper focuses on some projects created in the last decades, in order to elucidate different expressions of ruins in contemporary art. The article concludes by stating that the power of vestiges in the artistic practices of our days lies in its capacity to substitute the epistemological paradigm based on ontological categories -inherited from Modernity- with another paradigm that may consider the history as a tension field.

Keywords : aesthetics; art; contemporaneity; ruins..
