Abstract

MONTERO, Daniel. Some notes on “the contemporary” in the critic of art in Mexico. Índex [online]. 2018, n.5, pp.54-61. ISSN 2477-9199.  https://doi.org/10.26807/cav.v0i04.96.

Since 2009, a question has been raised about the status of art criticism in Mexico, which some have identified as a crisis and that relates to their alleged inefficiency. However, this supposed inefficiency is a product of the mythologization of critical work, as well as the lack of a genealogy that allows us to identify how art criticism has worked at different times. What I am interested in showing in this text is precisely that criticism in Mexico has enunciated space and time in different ways and that the supposed crisis of current criticism is produced, partially, by the introduction of the notion of "contemporary" as part of a process. This process has to do, in part, with the loss of validity of the concept of style, which was essential to determine if a work was "art" or not, and that it stopped operating in the mid-nineties.

Keywords : contemporary art; art in México; art critic; Cuauhtémoc Medina; Teresa del Conde.
