Abstract

CALVETTI, Dixon. Chimó as an (material) and symbolic element in artistic creation practices in Venezuela. Índex [online]. 2017, n.4, pp.77-85. ISSN 2477-9199.

The present article raises a reflection from the practices of artistic creation in the use and appropriation of the chimó as a symbolic and material element. In this case, this subject has served as a creative vehicle for projecting plastic processes in the context of contemporary Venezuelan art in different media. In this sense I use this substance as support to build a personal and experimental plastic language. This research is based on a historical study of the chimó as an originary material of our ancestral culture currently manifested in some popular imaginaries in Venezuela that use the chimó as a symbolic practice. It will result in several activities (expository samples), of these plastic processes titled: Cosmologías Rituales (2008), gallery of the UCV, Caracas. Reinventing the Sacred. (2009), Carmelo Fernandez Museum, San Felipe-Edo-Yaracuy. Testimonies of Faith (2016-2017), Carmelo Fernandez Museum, San Felipe-Edo Yaracuy.

Keywords : Chimó; ancestral practice; artistic creation; material; symbolic; sacred.
