Metabolic syndrome is a set of disorders that involves a greater risk of suffering from cardiovascular accidents, diabetes mellitus and is associated with disorders of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, high blood pressure and overweight, especially in the elderly population.
This article seeks to describe the evaluation of metabolic syndrome through laboratory tests carried out in elderly adults in Ambato city. The laboratory parameters that were taken as part of this study were: fasting glucose, HDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, accompanied by blood pressure levels that are governed based on the diagnostic criteria proposed by the National Cholesterol Education Programs Adults Treatment Panel. III Report (NCEP- ATP III). The methodology used had a quantitative approach allowing us to relate clinical parameters with laboratory tests.
Among the results obtained, it can be mentioned that female elderly adults were the most vulnerable to developing metabolic syndrome with 55.9% of whom had diabetes (48.5%) and illnesses (19.1%) as a personal history. cardiovascular diseases further increasing the risk of suffering from this syndrome.
