Resumen

CASTIBLANCO URREGO, Orlando  y  GUERRERO ESCARRAGA, David Stiven. Hydrogen production from biomass by means of dark fermentation: a review. Perfiles [online]. 2023, vol.1, n.30, pp.32-46. ISSN 2477-9105.  https://doi.org/10.47187/perf.v1i30.237.

Hydrogen is an energy carrier and an industrial raw material that can be obtained through various methods, among which dark fermentation is included, and from different biomass sources, where conditions and yield are influenced by pH, inoculum, substrate, nutrients, temperature, and reactor type. The Enterobacter, Bacillus and Clostridium bacterial genera, given their physicochemical characteristics, yield approximately 2 mol H2/mol glucose. The article highlights that this process offers significant advantages, such as the use of renewable raw materials and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional methods based on fossil fuels. Furthermore, the importance of the role of the chemical engineer is emphasized in enhancing process efficiency and stability, overcoming technical challenges, and mitigating adverse effects on the environment.
