Abstract

ESPARZA, Karla; CAMPOVERDE, Kerly  and  CORREA-QUEZADA, Ronny. Development Index of the Regions of Ecuador. Revista Economía y Política [online]. 2023, n.37, pp.18-30.  Epub Jan 30, 2023. ISSN 2477-9075.  https://doi.org/10.25097/rep.n37.2023.02.

This research analyzes territorial disparities on an interregional scale through the approximation and construction of the Latin American Regional Development Index (IDERE LATAM) for the Ecuadorian case. The index is made up of eight dimensions, some of them non-traditional, which makes it stand out from other indices. The results suggest that, at a global level, development is medium, medium high and high; specifically, Galapagos and Azuay present the highest levels of development. The analysis of the different dimensions made it possible to identify that the interregional gaps are marked in the environment and well-being and cohesion; they are moderate in economy, education, institutions, security and gender; while, they are reduced in health. In general, the provinces reflect the best levels of development in education, health and gender. On the contrary, the worst performances are located in the economy and institutions; environment is also underdeveloped (with the exception of Galápagos).

Keywords : development; dimensions; disparities; regions.
