Abstract

ZUMARRAGA-ESPINOSA, Marcos. A study of the predictors of saving behavior in Ecuadorian university students. Revista Economía y Política [online]. 2022, n.35, pp.96-122.  Epub 31, 2022. ISSN 2477-9075.

From an interdisciplinary perspective, this research explores the determinants of individual savings behavior in the Ecuadorian context. To this end, an explanatory model that integrates theoretical contributions produced from economics, sociology, and psychology is proposed. We based the quantitative study on a sample of 1535 university students from public and private institutions in Quito, Ecuador. The multivariate regression analysis shows that socioeconomic variables such as family income, age, parental education, and gender do not significantly predict saving behavior. In contrast, there is a positive relationship between family financial socialization, altruism, and financial literacy to saving behavior. Financial literacy was positioned as the most relevant explanatory factor of saving behavior among the significant predictors.
