Abstract
MENESES BUCHELI, Karla J.; CORDOVA MONTERO, Gabriela and AGUIRRE SORIA, Kamila. The highlights of the ecuadorian labor market in seven stylized facts. Revista Economía y Política [online]. 2021, n.33, pp.1-33. Epub 15, 2021. ISSN 2477-9075. https://doi.org/https://doi.org/10.25097/rep.n33.2021.01.
The Ecuadorian labor market presents structural problems that have characterized it for several decades, and that undermine the achievements to improve the quality of life of the population. In the context of a high deterioration of employment and income indicators, this paper offers a picture of the labor market with which the country arrived before the pandemic, the same one that already presented important challenges to retake and improve the quality of life of the people. The document uses official figures published in the surveys of Employment, Unemployment and Underemployment (ENEMDU) of the National Institute of Statistics and Census of Ecuador (INEC) until December 2019. The main findings are a selection of seven stylized facts that highlight the challenges presented by changes in the demographic structure as well as the weaknesses in the generation of quality jobs and a high concentration of underemployment in the economy. Finally, it makes visible the persistence of unequal insertion of vulnerable groups in the labor market and highlights the importance of discussing labor legislation in a scenario that presents unequal access, high underemployment and sensitivity to the trajectory of the economic cycle.
