Abstract

JARRIN, Pablo Santiago; CARRILLO, Luis Tapia  and  ACOSTA, Giannina Zamora. The internal colony as a current issue: transformation of the human territory in the Amazonian region of Ecuador. Letras Verdes [online]. 2016, n.20, pp.22-43. ISSN 1390-6631.  https://doi.org/10.17141/letrasverdes.20.2016.2063.

The Amazonian region of Ecuador shared with the rest of Amazonia a complex network of cultures and civilizations, which were drastically reduced or became extinct after the colonialist policies that were promoted from Europe and later by the new republics. Since then, the colonialist processes have been based on economic and developmental policies that are incompatible with the culture, ways of life, and ecology of the region, and have unleashed a dramatic series of social consequences that represent obstacles for the healthy development of its inhabitants. As a territory that has been exploited for its natural resources, chaotically occupied by the human population, with inefficient systems of production and ecological vulnerability, we believe that the concept of internal colony should remain a current issue. The concept of internal colony should be present in the search for solutions to the problems confronting the region.

Keywords : region; Amazonia; internal colony; political ecology.
