Abstract

OLEAS MOGOLLON, Daniela  and  ALBORNOZ BARRIGA, María Belén. The bicycle and the transformation of Quito’s public space (2003-2014). Letras Verdes [online]. 2016, n.19, pp.24-44. ISSN 1390-6631.  https://doi.org/10.17141/letrasverdes.19.2016.1817.

The increasingly widespread of the use of bicycles as an alternative transportation has caused profound changes in the cities’ public spaces. This article focuses on explaining the controversies around the public policies design of bike lanes and city bicycles that promote non-motorized transportation in Quito. From a socio-technical perspective this work uses three levels of analysis: the context in which policy is formulated, the construction of the bicycle as a socio-technical artifact and its use on the streets, and the closure of the controversies of the relevant groupsabout the impulse of the bike path as a tool of non-motorized transport.

Keywords : analysis; bicycle; mobility policies; transformation of urban public space..
