Resumen

ANZELINI, Luciano. Armed Forces and Pandemic in Argentina (2020-2021): Military Professionalization in Subsidiary Missions. URVIO [online]. 2022, n.32, pp.42-58. ISSN 1390-4299.  https://doi.org/10.17141/urvio.32.2022.4992.

The article sets out to analyze the role of the Argentine armed forces in the face of the COVID-19 health emergency, taking as a reference the expansion of the military role in Latin America in the context of the pandemic. The aim is to exhibit that, despite certain experts having warned about the dangers to democracies in other Latin American countries, the prolonged assumption of subsidiary missions by Argentine soldiers has not revealed negative consequences. The investigation combines conceptual tools from political science and the study of civil-military relations, in addition to the use of a qualitative design adjusted to the method known as “deviant case study”. It is concluded that political, normative and professional aspects explain the success of the “General Belgrano Operation”, carried out by the Argentine armed forces to deal with the pandemic.

Palabras clave : armed forces; civil-military relations; military professionalization; pandemic; subsidiary missions.
