Abstract

ANDRADE-VASQUEZ, Miguel. Doctrine and Military Structure of Ecuador: Facing or Turning Away from the Threats of the 21 st Century. URVIO [online]. 2021, n.29, pp.109-121. ISSN 1390-4299.  https://doi.org/10.17141/urvio.29.2021.4322.

The realistic orientation of the military doctrine of the Ecuadorian Armed Forces has remained unchanged over time despite a dynamic scenario of threats to the State. The objective of the article is to determine the historical origin of the realistic roots in the doctrine of the Armed Forces and their link to the resistance to new roles demanded by the State and society in present days, which leads to rigidity in the military structure against threats such as drug trafficking and organized crime. The methodology applied is a case study, throughout a historical analysis within the classical realism approach of the International Relations theories. The study concludes that the realism perpetuated in the military doctrine of the Armed Forces might obey to a wrong construction of the threat to face. This triggers internal resistance to the change of role that the State demands from the military institution at present, in the face of diffuse and unconventional threats.
