Abstract
AGUIRRE SALAS, Andrea; LEON, Typhaine and RIBADENEIRA, Nadia. Penitentiary System and Penalized Population During the “RevoluciónCiudadana” Decade (2007-2017). URVIO [online]. 2020, n.27, pp.94-110. ISSN 1390-4299. https://doi.org/10.17141/urvio.27.2020.4303.
This article analyzes, from a feminist perspective, the transformations of the punitive state in Ecuador throughout the decade of the “RevoluciónCiudadana”, and its impacts on the penalized population. The methodology combines literature review with the analysis of publications and official documents, statistical data and long-term participatory action research. The authors study the two sub-periods into which the government of the “RevoluciónCiudadana” is usually divided: guarantee state (2007-2010) and punitive state (2010-2017). They question this periodization through the reconstruction of the transformation process of the penal and penitentiary systems throughout the decade, from the perspective of imprisoned women, their children’s and family of people in prison. They conclude that the government of the “RevoluciónCiudadana” consolidated a punitive patriarchal state and, due to its internal dynamics, succumbed to the neoliberal logic of criminal populism.
