Resumen

GARCIA SANZ, Daniel. China: Grand Strategy and Seapower in the Xi Jinping Era. URVIO [online]. 2020, n.27, pp.57-72. ISSN 1390-4299.  https://doi.org/10.17141/urvio.27.2020.4381.

China has expanded the reach of its maritime power due to the geo-economic and geo-strategic imperatives set by the current phase of its resurgence as a great power. The aim of this article is to analyze the role of seapower in China’s grand strategy in the Xi Jinping era. The methodology complements the reviewof secondary sources (recent works by some of the most recognized experts on China’s international relations) with references to primary sources (official Chinese pronouncements and documents). Employing the concepts of grand strategy and seapower, it is argued that the clearest manifestation of China’s grand strategy of “national rejuvenation” in the Xi Jinping era is the Belt and Road Initiative. Its geostrategic logic expands the geographic scope of Chinese seapower, comprising the “near seas” in the Pacific Ocean and the “far seas” in the Indian Ocean.

Palabras clave : and Road Initiative; China; grand strategy; Indian Ocean; naval power; seapower; Xi Jinping.
