Abstract

BAQUES, Josep. The Case of the SenkakuIslands as a Paradigm of Gray Zone. URVIO [online]. 2020, n.27, pp.42-56. ISSN 1390-4299.  https://doi.org/10.17141/urvio.27.2020.4056.

Chinese actions in the homonymous sea are increasingly assertive, but they are generated without any casus belli. This analysis aims to unravel both the reasons for this policy, and the instruments to carry it out. For this, the gray zone approach is used as a theoretical framework, through a methodological commitment based on its distinction from hybrid wars, while what happened in the Senkaku islands operates as a case study. The main conclusion is that the states that use the gray zone have something as important as the strategic initiative, which generates strong wear on the defenders of the status quo, even if in short term does not reach all of the proposedobjectives.

Keywords : China; geopolitics; gray zone;hybrid war; international security.
