Abstract

MONKEVICIUS, Paola Carolina. Visibility and Memories-Building Processes among Afro-Descendants. El Afroargentino Case. Íconos [online]. 2017, n.57, pp.161-174. ISSN 1390-8065.  https://doi.org/10.17141/iconos.57.2017.2143.

This article focuses on the relationship between the new forms of expression of Afro-descendent memory in Argentina and the current processes of visibilization and political demand, analyzing the particularities that have a written support of subaltern senses of the past in its relation with hegemonic forms of transmission of the history. It specifically concentrates on the periodical publication El Afroargentino, published by the civil association African Diaspora from Argentina (DIAFAR by its Spanish acronym), since 2014. Through the ethnographic analysis carried out, it is maintained that these subaltern conceptualizations call into question dominant knowledge, negotiating and disput-ing new forms of legitimacy and criteria of truth about the past, which enable uses and practices in conflict for the recognition of historically denied citizens’ rights. At the same time, the publication empowers certain sectors of Afro leadership as authorized spokesmen to define, recreate and transmit the memory of Afro-descendants in Argentina.

Keywords : memoirs; hegemonic history; Afro-Argentineans; periodical publication; writing.
