The conceptualization and application of the notion of "generation" have been the subject of many debates in the field of the contemporary social theory. This article presents the path that the use of the concept in the field of social theory has had, from its first applications to the contemporary approaches. At the same time, the main current challenges to the use of this notion are noted, in order to support its own positioning concerning the debate, which rescues the relevance of the concept of political generation for understanding the dynamics of social movements, in function of a broad and comprehensive perspective.

Keywords : generation; cohorts; contemporary social theory; political generation; militant ethos; social movements.
