Abstract

CADENA, Jorge  and  JIMENEZ, María Soledad. Analysis and Simulation of the Polarization Mode Dispersion Phenomenon using ITU-T G.655 Optical Fibers. Rev Politéc. (Quito) [online]. 2019, vol.43, n.2, pp.21-28. ISSN 2477-8990.

This work is based principally on the analysis and simulation of the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) occurring in optical single mode fibers. In this work, mathematical expressions and principal characteristics of this phenomenon, which affects fiber communications specially when working with bit rates exceeding 10 Gb/s and large distances, are described. Specifically, attenuation and dispersion levels occurred due to PMD when optical pulses are transmitted working with NZDSF fibers, according to the ITU-T G.655 recommendations, are analyzed. After a considerable number of simulations, the bit rate and distance values in which PMD’s effects begin causing significant consequences in the quality of the transmission are determined. Finally, a PMD compensation technique is probed and analyzed considering the examples previously described.

Keywords : Polarization mode dispersion; optical pulses propagation; ITU-T G.655 NZDSF optical fibers.
