Abstract

Due to the lack of information systems on the occurrence of atmospheric discharges in the country, the starting point for a future implementation of a lightning detection network in Ecuador is presented, through an analysis of the different direct or indirect parameters that they influence the generation of atmospheric discharges. The indicators for the occurrence of lightning in Ecuador as well as the demography and sensitive areas to be protected have been taken as a reference, in order to identify the adequate places for the placement of the sensors and thus efficiently detect the electrostatic field generated by a storm cloud. To this end, technical information from existing sensors in the market was used to determine the most suitable when structuring the network. Finally, two network proposals are presented (optimal case, lower cost) to then make a technical-economic analysis and present the best option.
