GARCIA-RAMIREZ, Yasmany; ZARATE, Belizario; SEGARRA, Soledad e GONZALEZ, Julio. Daily and Hourly Variation of the Operating Speed in Two-lane Rural Roads in Loja Canton. Rev Politéc. (Quito) [online]. 2017, vol.40, n.1, pp.45-51. ISSN 2477-8990.
On road safety, design consistency evaluation of a road could be estimated using the operating speed profile of vehicles. This profile is obtained from tangent and curves speed and acceleration models. These models are generated from operating speeds that are collected in the field. In the previous literature, data collection was performed during various times of the day. In this scenario, this study aimed to determine whether operating speeds vary between hours of the day and between days in the week in rural two-lane roads, in order to recommend the days and hours where most representative operating speeds will be obtained. For that, speeds of four rural two-lane roads were collected with the MetroCount model MC5600 plus device. The device was placed in tangent to ensure that the vehicles achieved high speeds. The results show that there are significant variations in operating speed between weekdays. Also, it was found variations during nighttime and daytime, however, during daytime significant variations between whole hours were not found. This work suggests that speed data collect should be performed from Monday until Friday between 07h00 until 15h00, because the highest speeds are obtained in this period. These speeds are the less favorable speeds because they could affect the safety offered by the road.
