ALMEIDA, David. Mechanical and Chemical Stabilization of Orteguaza Shale at Tiputini Field on the Oriente Basin. Rev Politéc. (Quito) [online]. 2017, vol.40, n.1, pp.29-34. ISSN 2477-8990.
One of the biggest problems encountered when drilling oil wells, is how to keep shale stabilization when drilled with water based muds. Problems that had not been observed before, while drilling the Orteguaza formation at the Oriente Basin, were experienced while drilling this formation at Tiputini Field.
Laboratory tests were performed on samples taken from the first wells drilled, in order to determine if the instability origin of this shale, when exposed to water based mud, is mechanical, chemical, or both. Studies determined that the Orteguaza formation Shale at this Field, and at this pad, is micro fractured. These fractures had to be sealed in order to be able to drill this rock safely, with water based muds.
