Abstract

MEDINA, Christian  and  MEDINA, Santiago. Plan Irregularity Coefficient from the Torsion Analysis of Irregular Structures. Rev Politéc. (Quito) [online]. 2017, vol.39, n.2, pp.51-60. ISSN 2477-8990.

This paper analyses the different types of plan irregularities that are commonly found in reinforced concrete buildings and its effect in accidental torsion. Therefore, there are proposed linear finite element structural models that reflect these structural configurations, and through a modal analysis it is analyzed the accidental torsion effects in their dynamic behavior. At the same time, there are studied different methodologies to consider the accidental torsion in the seismic design, exposed in the construction provisions of American countries located in high seismic hazard zones, emphasizing the Ecuadorian Standard of Construction 2015; as well as methodologies proposed by researchers of the subject. Finally, it is proposed a plan irregularity coefficient calculation equation to be included in the seismic design, which is based on the modal mass participation ratios of each structure analyzed.

Keywords : Plan Irregularity; Accidental Torsion; Modal Mass.
