A UNACH study with data from 2016 identified four critical intersections in the city of Riobamba. Applying the same method of such study with data from 2017 and 2018, new intersections were identified. By using data from year 2019, the consulting company of the Mobility Plan of Riobamba identified other different that those mentioned above. Considering that no modifications have been made to the conditions of the intersections during the indicated period, it is evident that there is an inconsistency in the results obtained with a common method, since there is no pattern in the occurrence of accidents, setting an apparent randomness of these events. For that reason, the objective of this research was to analyze the methodology and the results of accidents in the city of Riobamba, obtained in the period 2016 at the beginning of 2019, to establish the origin of the inconsistencies detected. With that purpose, statistical analysis was applied to data series. It was found that the method applied by being very basic assigns a value to the intersection based on the severity of the accident, which does not correlate with the conditions of the site or with other factors that could be favoring their occurrence. This information should be considered by regulators and traffic consultants for the application of methods that include the complexity of the vehicular traffic in the occurrence of accidents.
