The Naricual (Late Oligocene-Early Miocene) and Officinal (Miocene) formations belonging to the Eastern Venezuela Basin are of economic importance due to the high oil-bearing potential. However, an accelerated decrease in production in the fields of this basin, caused by several factors, among them those related with fines migration and the formation damages generated by the presence of different clay minerals. The aim of this work is to determine the composition and distribution of the mineralogical phases present in the producing sands in both formations, in order to establish the extent of the formation damage that the clay minerals can generate. The mineralogical characterization was carried out by petrographic analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), dissolution assays in acids and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The mineralogy of the samples is governed by quartz, albite, calcite, dolomite, pyrite and muscovite. The predominant clay is kaolinite, although chlorite, illite / smectite and glauconite were detected in some samples; the percentage of clays ranges between 6 and 12%, with an average of 6.8% for the Naricual sandstones, and 7.2% for Officinal. The results obtained constitute a fundamental input when orienting action plans aimed at increasing production.
