In the history of art and literature, recognition of women's participation came late. Man has been regarded, in a traditional outline of history, as the main creative subject, whereas female characters have been placed in the realm of marginality or oblivion - with very few exceptions though-. This lack of recognition took a turn in the second half of the twentieth century thanks to the feminist movement that placed previously absent aspects on the discussion table, which currently allows new issues to be discussed. Amongst the various topics addressed, the usual look about the construct of motherhood has also broken up. The concept of mother, represented throughout history as the figure of sacrifice and virtue, has obtained these signifiers due to solidified discourses at the dawn of modernity. However, new narratives about feminism have managed to contrast and question the usual representations by showing new voices and places of enunciation.
