The oil activity developed since the 19th century in the province of Santa Elena may have been a potential source of environmental contamination and as a consequence of having affected to the health of the population, specifically in the San Raymundo sector of José Luis Tamayo, there are oil wells in production and in abandonment, in confusing legal conditions and violating environmental safety regulations. In the present article, an information survey was carried out on the wells surrounding the populated area of the sector. With the information extracted from the documentation of the wells and the surveys carried out on the population. A qualitative assessment of the environmental threats and the possible risks to the health of the population as a consequence of the settlement in vulnerable areas was established. The results show a zoning of the risk through a risk map due to the contamination produced by the concentration of hydrocarbons in the soil of the oil wells and the emission of toxic gases.
