Abstract
TOAPANTA, Diana and CALDERON, Lourdes. Research and development performance in ecuador and Latin America. RCUISRAEL [online]. 2017, vol.4, n.2, pp.17-27. Epub Aug 05, 2017. ISSN 2631-2786. https://doi.org/10.35290/rcui.v4n2.2017.56.
This article aims to evaluate the scientific production and research trends in Ecuador, in the context of Latin America in the period 2006 - 2014 by analyzing the impact of gross domestic product (GDP) and research and development (R&D) expenditure on the number of publications. It is evident that there is a linear and positive relationship between GDP in 2014 and the number of articles published. These results also allow contrasting the trends of research topics in Ecuador, and how they relate to the research objectives of Unesco and Senescyt. It is concluded that the effectiveness of science policy is reflected in R&D spending, as well as, in the indicators of publications that tend to concentrate on certain key points related to the six Unesco research areas, which contribute to the country's development and solve Latin American problems. Ecuador should strengthen private investment in research and focus on areas in which it appears to be competitive.
