Abstract

CHAMBA, M. S.; VARGAS, W.; RIOFRIO, J.  and  ECHEVERRIA, D.. Primary Frequency Regulation with Battery Energy Storage Systems in the Ecuadorian Power System. Revista Técnica energía [online]. 2022, vol.19, n.1, pp.13-21. ISSN 2602-8492.  https://doi.org/10.37116/revistaenergia.v19.n1.2022.506.

The new technical challenges associated to the connection of dynamic loads, regional grid interconnections, and a higher participation of renewable energies have caused drastic changes in the typical dispatch approaches of generation plants and the distribution of load flows. Thus, the stability and reliability of power systems have been gradually affected. In this regard, the battery energy storage systems (BESS) are considered as one of the most outstanding solutions at the moment. BESS are able to contribute to frequency and voltage stability on power systems.

In this paper, the benefits of implementing a storage system for power-frequency (P-f) control in the National Interconnected System (S.N.I. for its Spanish acronym) are modeled and analyzed. For this purpose, the components of the BESS are modeled in DIgSILENT PowerFactory on a reduced data base of the Ecuadorian Interconnected Power System S.N.I., which includes the speed governing systems of the main power plants and the contribution of the Colombian power system through a dynamic equivalent. Finally, an analysis of the impact of batteries under different scenarios is presented, taking into account the uncertainties in the power scheduling.
