Abstract

TORO MOLINA, Blanca Mercedes et al. Prevalence of the Newcastle virus in backyard poultry of the cantons of Latacunga and Salcedo. RCTU [online]. 2022, vol.9, n.2, pp.118-125. ISSN 1390-7697.  https://doi.org/10.26423/rctu.v9i2.716.

Newcastle disease is one of the viral conditions with a high degree of pathogenesis. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of Newcastle disease in backyard poultry of the cantons of Latacunga and Salcedo, in Cotopaxi - Ecuador. 180 backyard poultry of different sex and ages were sampled. An epidemiological survey was carried out through a probabilistic sampling, on the category of birds; age range; purpose of rearing and previous illnesses. The ELISA-i test was used to detect cases positive for the disease. The prevalence of Newcastle disease was 13.89% associated with non-vaccination against the disease, with female birds and adult animals between 12-24 weeks or higher being more affected. With cases where the birds were at the peak of the viral disease or the virus in its part of replication and transmission.

Keywords : Respiratory disease; ELISA test; serology.
