Abstract

ESPINOZA CUADRADO, Jonathan et al. Fuel consumption versus eco-driving and traffic on a mixed route in the city of Quito. RCTU [online]. 2022, vol.9, n.2, pp.85-96. ISSN 1390-7697.  https://doi.org/10.26423/rctu.v9i2.708.

Fuel consumption has been a great source of research dueto the impact it has on both environmental pollution and the user’s economy, and much more so when this resource has suffered price increases. The present research aimed to compare the impact of driving style and traffic on fuel consumption on a mixed route in the city of Quito. Due to the high density of traffic, the selected route had Mariscal Sucre Avenue as its central axis, crossing the city from north to south and vice versa. For the measurement of fuel consumption, the SAE J1321:2012 Fuel Consumption TestProcedure standard was considered, while for the driving parameters, a data logger (an Arduino datalogger) built based on the Elm327 automotive scanner was used. It was identified that it was possible to save up to 18.94% of fuel concerning high traffic and through eco-driving. The greatest impact of savings was given by using eco-driving without traffic, which allows fuel savings of up to 35.39% compared to the same route with traffic. In conclusion, the efficient driver manages to save up to $ 1.41 per 100 km in traffic, and by preferring eco-driving without traffic, he manages to save up to $ 2.83 per 100 kilometers on the route studied.
