Abstract

DROUET-CANDELL, Andrés; VALAREZO-BELTRON, Oswaldo; CAMACHO-ABRIL, Johnny  and  GARCIA-VASQUEZ, Guillermo. Promoters of sustainability in cocoa agroforestry systems (Theobroma cacao L.) in Madre de Dios (Perú) and San Placido (Ecuador). RCTU [online]. 2019, vol.6, n.2, pp.76-81. ISSN 1390-7697.  https://doi.org/10.26423/rctu.v6i2.478.

The study was executed in both locations Madre de Dios (Perú) and San Plácido (Ecuador). The main objective of this study was to establish suitable indicators for further research in cocoa agroforestry systems and the characterization and quality methodology. It was required to elaborate indicators and variables to assess the sustainability of the production systems in two types of groups: a conventional cocoa and cocoaguadua plantation in the locations, based on MESMIS methodology. The application of the indicators Will allow to identify variations between cocoa with monoculture production farms and farms with the cocoaguadua production system. The sustainability evaluation and its holistic análisis Will permit to understand the relativity of the results according to the analyzeddimensions. Transformation of cocoa monoculture into sustainable cocoa production systems Will facilitate cocoa producers not to relying on the production and commercialization of this isolated crop. This agroforestry system research, is expected to contribute to carbon sequestration efficiently, to make it possible a radial graph should be applied in order to reveal the dynamics of the variables. This graph will exemplify the critical points of the systems, giving an idea of the distance between the ideal situation and the current one. The integration of forest resources in cocoa monoculture production will generate improvement in the management dynamics of the successions in the cultivation system, similar to the observed in natural ecosystems.

Keywords : sustainability; agroforestry systems; cocoa.
