Abstract

GOMEZ,, Elías  and  MINO, María-Gabriela. Compartmentalizing Nature: On Mexico's and Argentina's Protected Natural Areas. Letras Verdes [online]. 2023, n.33, pp.86-102.  Epub Aug 31, 2023. ISSN 1390-6631.  https://doi.org/10.17141/letrasverdes.33.2023.5567.

Reassuming Abram de Swaan’s and Norbert Elias' contributions, the article observes that the interdependencies between nature and (dis)civilizing processes are essential for a processual focus on Protected Natural Areas (PNA). It describes common features of PNA and their relationships with various management models, taking examples from Mexico and Argentina. It proposes a bibliographical review of background studies, official documents, and ethnographic works in Mexico and Argentina as a framework for future comparative analyses of PNA. It concludes with a summary of the key components that PNA have in common as well as the potential applications of the “compartmentalization” concept.

Keywords : Argentina; civilization; environment; Mexico; nature conservation.
