University social responsibility is a relevant topic in several Ibero-American countries, responding to the call of international organizations and Ibero-American inter-university networks. The objective of this article is to analyze the incorporation of the concept of social responsibility in the strategic management of Chilean universities, developing a descriptive study by means of a mixed content analysis of strategic plans of a sample of Chilean universities. The results show a scarce use of this concept in the documents analyzed, being incorporated mainly in the identification of institutional values and principles, with a lesser use in the declaration of institutional mission and vision. The main conclusion of the study is that the Chilean universities included in the sample do not consider social responsibility as an explicit conceptual model to guide their strategic direction, and therefore, it is not integrally deployed in their organizational work or in the functioning of the Chilean higher education system.
