El propósito de este ensayo es analizar tres secuencias de Manta Ray en las que hay un tratamiento fílmico del rostro de los protagonistas que es consistente y que puede relacionarse con el concepto de fisonomía de Béla Balázs, así como con la noción de ética de la alteridad de Emmanuel Lévinas. Este entramado teórico contribuirá a reconocer el significado implícito del filme en relación con su contexto y, sobre todo, la forma en que el cineasta Phuttiphong Aroonpheng interpretó el problema antropológico del encuentro entre identidad y alteridad más allá del argumento del filme. La descripción de la dialéctica formal, la síntesis del relato y los conceptos sugeridos permitirán entender por qué el abordaje del rostro constituye un motivo fílmico que representa la fisonomía humana como fundamento de una posible mirada intercultural.

The purpose of this essay is to analyze three Manta Ray sequences in which there is a filmic treatment of the protagonists' faces that is consistent and that can be related to the concept of physiognomy of Béla Balázs, as well as to the Emmanuel Levinas notion of ethics of otherness. This theoretical framework will help to recognize the implicit meaning of the film in relation to its context and, above all, the way in which filmmaker Phuttiphong Aroonpheng interpreted the anthropological problem of the encounter between identity and otherness beyond the film's plot. Description of the formal dialectics, narrative´s synthesis and suggested concepts will allow to understand why the approach to the face constitutes a filmic motif that represents the human physiognomy as the foundation of a possible intercultural gaze.
