In the 1960s, the debates around the notion of author lead the transition to a contemporary theory of cinema. In the United States, Andrew Sarris inherits the postulates of the politique des auteurs (that had been coined in the pages of Cahiers du cinéma shortly before) and applies them to American cinema. Confronting with Dwight Macdonald or Manny Farber, Sarris' texts prepared the path for the introduction of film studies to the university although, significantly, academic perspective was established as an attack against auterism. This essay studies that moment prior to the consolidation of Film Studies, when cinema still had to prove its legitimacy in the territory of the arts.
