América Latina como escenario de investigación es una región que durante años ha sufrido las consecuencias de la explotación, dependencia y la globalización. La ciencia latinoamericana en los últimos años ha realizado una serie de iniciativas con el objetivo de romper la dependencia que imponen las principales bases de datos que indizan a las publicaciones. Se plantearon como objetivos del estudio: 1) identificar las características del pensamiento latinoamericano sobre ciencia, tecnología y sociedad y 2) identificar las iniciativas que desde América Latina se han realizado para la emancipación de la ciencia. Para la obtención de resultados se emplean métodos y técnicas en los niveles teórico y empírico. Se identifica que la relación de América Latina con el Norte Global en cuanto a ciencia y tecnología ha sido fundamentalmente de recepción de tecnologías. Existe poca presencia de publicaciones latinoamericanas en las bases de datos de corriente principal de la ciencia. En la región se han desarrollado iniciativas para romper la dependencia científica, siendo las más exitosas SciELO y SciELO Citation Index.

Latin America as a research scenario is a region that for years has suffered the consequences of exploitation, dependence and globalization. Latin American science in recent years has made a series of initiatives with the aim of breaking the dependence imposed by the main databases that index publications. The objectives of the study were: 1) to identify the characteristics of Latin American thinking about science, technology and society and 2) to identify the Latin American initiatives that have been carried out for the emancipation of science. To obtain results, methods and techniques are used at the theoretical and empirical levels. It is identified that the relationship between Latin America and the Global North in terms of science and technology has been fundamentally the reception of technologies. There is little presence of Latin American publications in mainstream databases of science. In the region, initiatives have been developed to break the scientific dependence, the most successful are SciELO and SciELO Citation Index.
